Visit A Legendary Aviator’s Grave

CHARLES LINDBERGH earned celebrity status when he became the first aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1974, the longtime Maui resident returned to the island to plan his own funeral.

The aviator died at the age of 72 on Aug. 26, 1974, and found a measure of peace in an ISOLATED CEMETERY ON THE SLOPES OF HALEAKALĀ, 12 miles beyond Hāna in KĪPAHULU. The cemetery is located 1 mile from the headquarters of Haleakalā National Park. To pay your respects at the somewhat-hidden cemetery, look for the 41-mile marker sign on Pi‘ilani Highway. Drive past the fruit stand, and the road to the church will be on your left.
