Just past ALLERTON GARDEN VISITOR CENTER on Lāwa‘i Road is a well- known phenomenon called SPOUTING HORN . This dual lava tube breathes air and makes a uniquely eerie dragon sound through one tube while the other shoots a powerful spray of salt water. The tubes are set about 10 feet from the shoreline, and on large south- swell days, the spray can exceed 30 feet.
Hawaiian legend has it that a giant dragon once terrorized the entire south side of the island. One day, a brave warrior went fishing at Spouting Horn, and when the dragon attacked him, he speared it in the mouth. The wounded dragon chased the warrior into a lava tube. He escaped, but the mean dragon was trapped forever. Today, you can still hear the dragon’s breath coming from the tube.
