KAUA‘I WILDLIFE REFUGE is located in a remote area of the island that, until recently, was not accessible to the public. SAFARI HELICOPTERS has made it possible to land here and get a look at what one man is doing to save endangered Hawaiian species.
Located on a 10-acre site overlooking the privately owned ‘ OLOKELE CANYON , the refuge is owned and operated by Keith Robinson, who has spent two decades preserving rare Hawaiian plants.
Owned by the Robinson family, the heads of one of Kaua‘i’s original sugar plantation companies, the sprawling canyon extends from WAIMEA to the back west side of MOUNT WAI‘ALE‘ALE. Moviegoers may remember the rugged canyon from the film
, but typically, it can be seen only from a seat on a helicopter. On the tour, visitors also get an opportunity to see what it takes to save Hawai‘i’s rare, and very threatened, native species. SAFARI HELICOPTERS 800-326-3356
